Tendering From the Grid

Don’t let the name fool you. Users need the ability not only to send tenders, but also reject, accept, and cancel tenders. Okay, how about also plan to a driver, truck, fleet, or business unit? Sounds good, but wait they also need the ability to cancel plans for selected loads. Whew, that’s a lot of actions in one grid.

Research

Hitting the ground running on the loads team, I leveraged existing user insights from the team’s previous UX researcher. Reading though previous research about my new users helped me quickly get familiar with their workflows and needs, and start off the project with a good foundation.

Solutioning

I then facilitated ideation and prioritization workshops with a cross-functional team, bringing together the product, development, and business teams associated with the project. Everyone’s ideas were brought together, and I contributed multiple overall direction options for them to weigh in on as well. Finally, I conducted user research the verify the success of the design, which scored high marks with our users.

The Solution

Pulling together all of these actions was no easy task. Ultimately we were able to use combinations of our primary, secondary, and tertiary buttons to accomplish all of them. When certain combinations are selected on the grid that have incompatible actions, the user is informed why they can’t take actions on them, and directed to choose one type of action to take at a time. User testing revealed that going through each action and workflow was intuitive, even on first try.
